Peter Sellers was a comic genius. Bet you heard that before.
Revenge Of The Pink Panther (1978) is simply one of many films in which Peter Sellers excelled. If you consider his performance in Dr. Strangelove, Lolita, The Party, A Shot In The Dark (my fav panther movie), After the Fox, The Ladykillers (his first film playing opposite the previous generations comic actor genius, Alec Guiness), most could only conclude that Peter Sellers understood comedy in a very different way than most. His facility with voice characterizations, facial gestures as he reacted to situations. For example, a comic pratfall like the spinning globe sequence in The Pink Panther is funny because of the way he reacts to what has happened. He plays up the embarrassment angle while continuing to come across as inept. The idea of a revised version of the comics "slowburn" only making it specific to a situation which is enhanced with great comic timing, is truly Sellers. He played three parts in Dr. Strangelove, orig it was to be four, however, he hurt his ankle in one particular scene creating what I will assume was an incredibly rare opportunity for Slim Pickins. Peter Sellers had a special relationship with Blake Edwards. They both wanted to create very new and innovative characters in an scenario that would put the principal role just shy from being over the top. In fact, Sellers is one of the few comics that knows exactly where the "over the top limit" exists. He takes Clouseau to a very far reaching end of slapstick but at the same time, making him totally original. The fact that he decided to play a frenchman was no different than him playing a German or Brit. Sellers once said that he could be given any role and he will become that charactor. He certainly always did do just that; and better than anyone else.
