"Every man fights his own way. "Based on former Marine Anthony Swofford's best-selling 2003 book about his pre-Desert Storm experiences in Saudi Arabia and about his experiences fighting in Kuwait.
Fresh out of an advanced screening..
I'd like to be able to contain my excitement for comments that seem
less biased, but this movie is destined to be a classic.
Jarhead is less Saving Private Ryan, and more Platoon. Many scenes are
about as dark and intense as you will find, and largely w/o blood and
Sam Mendes is known to be great, but hopefully this movie will bring
him more recognition, rather than being referred to as the director of
American Beauty. This look at Operation Desert Storm is cold, fearful,
mean, and altogether sobering.
Emanuel Levy has pointed out the symmetry in the movie, and he's made a
good point. I won't get into how the symmetry exists, but I'd like to
say that it is incredibly moving. It's a brilliant tactic for showing
how horrible the permanence of war experiences is.
