" A black comedy set in 1979, about a soldier mistakenly posted to an Arctic military base.

Not worth the time
This film has decent potential, at least in terms of story - an
extremely remote US airbase in 1976 where misfits from other units are
relegated. But the potential stops there. The first major flaw is
accents - why would so many supposedly American soldiers have clearly
European English accents? The second flaw lies with the level of
reality in the army depicted. The director or writer apparently had
little exposure to or familiarity with the American military - uniform
pieces are mixed and matched (the female lead wearing a modern female
DS' hat), the oft-cited DD201 mentions nothing about motivation or
inclination and instead lists only facts (in contrast to counseling
forms), the laxity in appearance is completely unrealistic (full beards
for men and shoulder-length hair for women), and so on. The Army parody
Stripes, which some reviewers have curiously compared this film to, at
least got the essentials of basic training right, thus earning it a
favored spot in the hearts of any of us who have served. Enough of the
cinematic critique. The reality is that I stopped the DVD halfway
through and have no intention of finishing it, something that very
rarely happens. Point is, you'd be far better off renting Stripes or
even the darker Catch-22.
